Meet the Teamsters unionizing the cannabis industry

As more states and districts around the country push for legalization, the cannabis industry has exploded in recent years, with researchers estimating that the industry could generate over $70 billion in sales by 2030. While investors and business owners have dollar signs in their eyes, though, it is the everyday employees, from growers and packers to bud tenders, who are making the industry run. But the vast vast majority of those workers are not reaping the benefits of these booming profits; in fact, many cannabis workers around the country report insufficient pay, overwork and burnout, disrespect and mistreatment from management, all while having to navigate changing customer needs, state and federal regulations, and top-down decisions from executives and company founders that are handed down with little to no input from the actual workers who know the industry best. That is why we are seeing a simultaneous explosion of organizing efforts by cannabis workers themselves. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with a panel of workers and organizers from the state of Illinois who have been fighting to unionize with the Teamsters and improve the cannabis industry for themselves, their coworkers, and their customers. Panelists include: Ami Schneider, a worker at Enlightened Dispensary in Schaumburg, Illinois, and a member of Teamsters Local 777; Ryan “Fro” Frohlich, a worker at Zen Leaf in Chicago, Illinois, and a member of Teamsters Local 777; Chris Smith, organizer and business agent for Teamsters Local 777; Jim Glimco, president and principal officer for Teamsters Local 777. UFCW Canada – The Union for Cannabis Workers

UFCW Canada is about putting cannabis workers first. For too long the focus of this emerging industry has surrounded valuations, profits, regulation, and impairment. As the industry enters legal status, concerns surrounding the well-being, safety, and security of staff should be central as well. So too should questions about compensation, having a voice at work, and fairly sharing not only the profits of the new industry, but also decision-making power.

Germany waters down plan to legalize Cannabis following EU concerns | DW News

The German government has announced plans to allow the possession of up to 25 grams (just under 0.9 ounces) of cannabis, and the cultivation of a maximum of three plants at home. The previous plan, which would have allowed cannabis to be sold in licensed stores nationwide, has been revised following concerns from the EU. The legislation would allow for the commercial distribution of cannabis only under special circumstances in so-called clubs, as presented by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir. "The previous cannabis policy has failed. Now we have to go new ways," Lauterbach said. #germany #cannabis #legalization Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Twitch: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍

More Illinois cannabis workers fight to unionize

SAUGET, Illinois - Cannabis workers in the St. Louis Metro East area say it's time to unionize. They're fighting for better working conditions, more job opportunities, and a commitment to improve local communities. Ian Spaeth is a cannabis worker at the dispensary Beyond Hello in Sauget, Illinois. The dispensary is owned by Jushi Holdings and operates 17 stores across the country, including four in Illinois. Spaeth has worked in the cannabis industry for about ten years and is also one of the more vocal employees that wants to unionize. "I absolutely love my job," said Spaeth. "I personally really like Jushi. I love seeing them grow, and I hope that they decide to let us grow with them." Moises Zavala is the Director of Organizing for Local 881, the United Food and Commercial Workers union. It represents a wide array of workers from food service to retail, and it's the only one taking on cannabis. He said cannabis workers tend to love the work, the service they provide, and the product. "They also like the company, believe it or not," said Zavala. "But they want to make sure that the standards improve." Read more: 🤍

LIVE New York: NYC Cannabis Parade & Rally (50th Anniversary) May 6, 2023

#newyork #walkingtour #cannabiseducation #unionsquare #parade SSO SuperFriends! Thank you for joining us! Source: 🤍 Overview The New York City Cannabis Parade & Rally (NYCCPR) is among the longest running marijuana legalization events in the world. What began as a “Smoke-In” in Washington Square Park organized by the Yippies in 1973 has evolved into a three-part Event: A Parade down Broadway, a Rally in Union Square Park and a celebratory After Party, all on the first Saturday in May. Sister events take place in cities worldwide on the same day. NYCCPR is the founding chapter of the Global Marijuana March. After grounding to to a halt in 2020 with New York City overwhelmed by Covid-19, NYCCPR came back in 2021 on May 1, but scaled down as according to the City's Covid regulations. That didn't prevent us from celebrating the passage of the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act that legalized cannabis on March 31. "Young people are able to celebrate today without a fear that a little bit of marijuana in their pocket could ruin their lives," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke to the crowd in Union Square. "More freedom, less fear." We are proud to have, for many decades, played a role in educating New Yorkers about prohibition and what needed to be done to change the state's outdated cannabis laws. Now that it has happened - in New Jersey and Connecticut as well - we urge other states to create fair and equitable commercial marketplaces. On the federal level, change is moving slower. And, on the local level, there are legal changes happening with other drugs, including psychedelics, heroin and cocaine. This year’s Parade & Rally will be both a celebration and acknowledgement of hard work well done by so many activists and advocates. New York has come a long way from when it was the Marijuana Arrest Capitol of the World. As we enter a new era, we must remain vigilant and keep our eyes on implementation and diversity as the cannabis industry grows in New York and across the Northeast. Parade Assembly begins at 11 am on the East side of Broadway between 32 and 33 Streets. Contingents assemble as speakers address the crowd. The Parade begins marching at 12:30 am. The Route is: Southbound on Broadway from 33 St. to Union Square Park at 14 St.. Credit Unions Solve Cannabis Cash Conundrum

A maxim in business holds that “cash is king.”But cash may not be the most efficient way of doing business. At least not at scale, and not when it comes to helping nascent industries take flight. The issue is particularly spotlighted by the cannabis industry, where, as noted this past week in Bloomberg, legal sales of cannabis topped $10 billion in 2018, as estimated by the Marijuana Business Factbook. Within the next several years, that could be worth $80 billion, according to research firm Cowen Inc. Read More: 🤍
