Korg has released an update to the Volca FM, this time with more polyphony, a reverb, and other quality of life enhancements. It still made me feel weird. This video explains why. To be fair: I think this is a really cool synth. FM is a great and expressive synthesis method, and 6-OP FM is really capable. I just wish some things had been done differently. Volca lovers rejoice, for it is the second coming of the Volca FM! Korg have just released a new updated and upgraded version of the Volca FM with expanded polyphony, a bigger patch memory and more! To celebrate, I have also updated my free, browser based editor for the Volca FM: Synthmata: 🤍 with an updated, more compact design and new usability tweaks, including operator copy-paste! One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the new Volca FM has a built in randomizer - it's fine, but I find that the patches it generates were a bit "safe" and you can't really direct it to the type of sound that you want like you can with Synthmata, but it's fine in a pinch! Hello Youtube! I'm super excited as I finally got my Korg Volca FM2! I ordered it back in February and wasn't expecting it until April sometime. But to my surprise it showed up! It's like a mantra that I repeat over and over again. It's a way of life that I believe in and want to take to anyone who will listen. It's true: fewer devices make you happier and more creative. My Youtube channel is now in its 6th year and we are scratching the 10K subscribers mark. If I can say one thing with certainty, which I have really become aware of in the past few years with you: Everyone who has tried "Less Gear" later confirmed to me that it was the beginning of something completely new for them, a realization which he hadn't had before. Many tell me that they thought they could express themselves through more and more different devices, or synthesizers. They might find out how it all works, which style of music suits them best. And that's exactly the wrong way. Buy a synthesizer and practice with it. Every day. Sit down and learn your instrument. find out things Play with heads. And yes, in God's name: just read the instructions if you have to. And then when you are sure, when you know 100%: that's what I want to do. Then you ask yourself if something is still missing to make you happy, maybe a little beatbox or an effect device. This is the right way, it has been confirmed to me so many times. So today a Single Gear Jam with the Volca FM. The FM is a double-edged sword. It can do an incredible amount and I can assure you, I spent 30 minutes in the sound editor, that's no fun. But there is. But it's more exciting if you play DEXED sounds on the FM. Maybe just random. And then see what you got. I did that again this week and check it out. There is a wonderful "harp" in the package that I hadn't tried yet. A dream. And so versatile. And then it just starts. Wait for minute 1:30 and just let yourself be taken on this magical journey.
