View full lesson: 🤍 The Japanese dance and theater art of kabuki, derived from the word kabuku, meaning "out of the ordinary," can be traced back to the streets of seventeenth-century Kyoto. Kabuki became a dramatic art for the common people, with its use of makeup and facial expressions rather than masks, as well as a playful take on current events. Amanda Mattes tracks the evolution of kabuki and its place in Japan's rich cultural heritage. Lesson by Amanda Mattes, animation by Tom Gran.

The kabuki play Shibaraku ("Wait a Moment!") was first staged by Ichikawa Danjūrō I at the Nakamura-za theatre in Edo, and represents the greatest surviving example of aragoto drama. Let's have a look at its plot and some of the main elements! Since the beginning of the Heisei period in 1989, there has been only 14 performances of Shibaraku, 4 by Ichikawa Danjūrō XII, 6 by his son, Ichikawa Ebizō XI, 2 by Onoe Shōroku IV (as part of productions of Gohiiki Kanjinchō), 1 by Ichikawa Uzaemon XVII (in 1993) and 1 by Matsumoto Kōshirō IX (in 1991). UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: 🤍 Description: Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style). Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form. After 1868, when Japan opened to Western influence, actors strove to heighten the reputation of Kabuki among the upper classes and to adapt the traditional styles to modern tastes. Today, Kabuki is the most popular of the traditional styles of Japanese drama. Country(ies): Japan

Leiter, for the period between 1952 and 1965 (in his book "Kabuki at the Crossroads"), yields almost the same results, with Renjishi replaced by Kagami Jishi, Futatsu Chōchō Kuruwa Nikki by Benten Kozō and Koi no Tayori Yamato Ōrai by Imoseyama Onna Teikin, and some small differences in the order. We're headed back to Japan, this time in the Edo period to follow up on Noh theater, which had gone out of style last time we checked in. Now, under the Shoguns, there's couple of really interesting types of drama on the scene. Kabuki is a sort of successor to Noh, with wilder stories and more action. And Bunraku is straight up high intensity puppet theater. Mike tells you all about how the Samurais got themselves into trouble watching bawdy theater shows in Edo. Crash Course is on Patreon! 01:33:39
16.02.2019

Book about kabuki: 🤍 Kabuki (ka歌 bu舞 ki伎) is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers. The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing". These are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of 'skill' generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre. Since the word kabuki is believed to derive from the verb kabuku, meaning "to lean" or "to be out of the ordinary", kabuki can be interpreted as "avant-garde" or "bizarre" theatre. The expression kabukimono (歌舞伎者) referred originally to those who were bizarrely dressed. It is often translated into English as "strange things" or "the crazy ones", and referred to the style of dress worn by gangs of samurai. In 2005, the Kabuki theatre was proclaimed by UNESCO as an intangible heritage possessing outstanding universal value. In 2008, it was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Bu konuda Alman Türkolog A.V. Gabain şöyle demektedir; " ... O dönem (iç bölgeler ) deki çinlilere nazaran, eski Şincan (Doğu Türkistan'ın) sanatı, sessiz tiyatrosu, danslı tiyatrosu, orkestrası ve ilkel tiyatrosu büyük celbetme gücüne sahipti. Elde bulunan el yazmalarına göre, Türk Uygur alfabesinde yazılan sahne eserlerinin konusu Çince sahne eserlerinkinden üstünlük göstermektedir. "Eski Sincan (Doğu Türkistan)ın opera heyetleri, şarkıcılaarı, erkek kadın sazcıları iç bölgelerde konserler vermiş ve coşkulu karşılanmıştır.

KABUKI STAR WARS: A Japanese dance-drama Theater from a Galaxy Far Far Away (from Japan!) FULL VIDEO! no copyright intended - i do not own the rights to this video The Star Wars franchise is about to breach the artistic final frontier with a one-off performance of a kabuki adaptation starring one of Japan’s most revered stage actors. The classical Japanese theatre, which combines highly stylised movement and unusual vocalisation, will swap samurai swords for lightsabers and replace feudal warriors with the forces of light and darkness. Star Wars Kabuki-Rennosuke and the Three Light Sabers, which are being staged in Tokyo, will combine plots from each of the franchise’s latest trilogy, substituting plots drawn from the days of feudal clan rivalry with drama from a galaxy far, far away. Ichikawa Ebizo XI, Japan’s pre-eminent kabuki actor, will take to the stage as Kylo Ren, the conflicted son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, in front of 50 winners of an online lottery. 🤍 Plays consolidate plots from the blockbuster establishment and highlight Ichikawa Ebizo XI, chief star of the customary acting structure. The Star Wars establishment is going to break the imaginative last outskirts with an irregular presentation of a kabuki adjustment featuring one of Japan's most adored stage on-screen characters. The old-style Japanese theater, which consolidates profoundly stylized development and unordinary vocalization, will swap samurai swords for lightsabers and supplant medieval warriors with the powers of light and dimness. Star Wars Kabuki-Rennosuke and the Three Light Sabers, which are being organized in Tokyo, will consolidate plots from every one of the establishment's most recent set of three, substituting plots drawn from the times of medieval faction competition with the show from a universe far, far away. Ichikawa Ebizo XI, Japan's pre-prominent kabuki entertainer, will make that big appearance as Kylo Ren, the tangled child of Han Solo and Princess Leia, before 50 victors of an online lottery. Ten days after the Star Wars execution, the performing craftsmanship will meet anime and manga in a kabuki adjustment of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by the eminent Japanese chief Hayao Miyazaki. While the area of the Star Wars execution has been stayed discreet, the Japan office of Disney, which is creating the show, said fans would have the option to watch by means of a live stream. Thursday's presentation, which will happen a long time before the nine-section Star Wars adventure attracts to a nearby with the arrival of The Rise of Skywalker, is the most recent endeavor by kabuki to shake off its stuffy picture and open it up to a more extensive group of spectators.

In this video, we take a look at the eleven scenes most often performed from the epic jidaimono play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura ("Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees"), written in 1747 for the bunraku puppet theatre by the playwrights Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shōraku and Namiki Senryū I, the same team that produced Kanadehon Chūshingura and Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, the other two classical masterpieces of the kabuki repertoire. This covers four of the five acts of the original play. The missing first one, including the scenes Ōuchi, Kitasaga, Kawagoe Jōshi and Heisoto, is very rarely performed nowadays. You can read the plot of this act here: 🤍 There is also a wonderful English translation of the complete bunraku script by Stanleigh H. Jones Jr., in his book "Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees: A Masterpiece of the Eighteenth-Century Japanese Puppet Theater".
