The kabuki play Shibaraku ("Wait a Moment!") was first staged by Ichikawa Danjūrō I at the Nakamura-za theatre in Edo, and represents the greatest surviving example of aragoto drama. Let's have a look at its plot and some of the main elements! Since the beginning of the Heisei period in 1989, there has been only 14 performances of Shibaraku, 4 by Ichikawa Danjūrō XII, 6 by his son, Ichikawa Ebizō XI, 2 by Onoe Shōroku IV (as part of productions of Gohiiki Kanjinchō), 1 by Ichikawa Uzaemon XVII (in 1993) and 1 by Matsumoto Kōshirō IX (in 1991). UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: 🤍 Description: Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style). Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form. After 1868, when Japan opened to Western influence, actors strove to heighten the reputation of Kabuki among the upper classes and to adapt the traditional styles to modern tastes. Leiter, for the period between 1952 and 1965 (in his book "Kabuki at the Crossroads"), yields almost the same results, with Renjishi replaced by Kagami Jishi, Futatsu Chōchō Kuruwa Nikki by Benten Kozō and Koi no Tayori Yamato Ōrai by Imoseyama Onna Teikin, and some small differences in the order. Momijigari ("Viewing the Autumn Foliage") is a dance-drama written by the playwright Kawatake Mokuami, and first performed in October 1887 at the Shintomi-za theatre in Tokyo. The actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX, in addition to creating the choreography, played the role of Princess Sarashina, while Taira no Koremochi was played by Ichikawa Sadanji I. In this video, we will have a look at some dances which are unique in the sense that they are rarely staged (around a couple of times every decade*) compared to the more popular works on the repertoire (which can often be seen almost every year), while being widely considered major dances of great artistic and historical value. The main actors appearing on the brief clips are Nakamura Fukusuke IX and Nakamura Baigyoku IV (Chō no Michiyuki), Ichikawa Ennosuke IV (Kurozuka), Onoe Shōroku II (Ukare Bōzu), Nakamura Utaemon VI (Ibaraki) and Bandō Tamasaburō V and Onoe Shōroku IV (Masakado). * Masakado, for example, was last performed in 2017 and 2013. Book about kabuki: 🤍 Kabuki (ka歌 bu舞 ki伎) is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers. The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing". These are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of 'skill' generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre. Since the word kabuki is believed to derive from the verb kabuku, meaning "to lean" or "to be out of the ordinary", kabuki can be interpreted as "avant-garde" or "bizarre" theatre. The expression kabukimono (歌舞伎者) referred originally to those who were bizarrely dressed. It is often translated into English as "strange things" or "the crazy ones", and referred to the style of dress worn by gangs of samurai. In 2005, the Kabuki theatre was proclaimed by UNESCO as an intangible heritage possessing outstanding universal value. In 2008, it was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Eğer Türkler Orjinal Kültürlerini Yitirmeselerdi Bugün Japon Kabuki Sanatı Gibi İlginç Ve Çekici Sahne Sanatlarına Sahip Olacaklardı... Eski Türk-Uygur Tiyatrosu menşe itibari ile çok eskilere dayanır. Refik Ahmet Sevengil " Türk Tiyatrosu Tarihi Eski Türklerde Dram Sanatı" adlı kitabında; " Çin'de hükümdar olan ilk üç sülalenin kurucuları da Türktür. Bunlar M.Ö. 2.202 yılından başlayarak M.Ö. 250 yılına kadar hüküm sürmüşlerdir. Görülüyor ki Çin'de ilk defa tiyatrodan bahsedilmesi- yani M.Ö. 1.150- Türklerin idaresi zamanına aittir. " Çin'de dram sanatını himaye edenler ve ilerletenler Türkler olduğu gibi orada bu sanatı kurmuş olanlar da Türklerdir " demektedir. Gerçekten de insanın en doğal davranışı olan taklit hareketlerine dayanan tiyatro sanatının diğer sanat dallarından önce doğduğu ve bunun hareketli Türkler arasında geliştiğini söylemek mümkündür. Eski ve yüksek kültür yaratan Türk boylarından biri olarak Uygurlar da aynı takdire layıktır. Uygur Türkleri arasında tiyatro sanatının ne denli geliştiğini Çin kaynaklarından öğrenmekteyiz. M.Ö. 139'da Türkistan'a gelen ilk Çin elçisi Cang Çien: " Uygurlar kendi dil ve yazısına sahip olmakla kalmayıp, kendilerine özgü müzik, dans, tiyatro, ressamlık ve heykeltraşlık alanlarında da çok zengin ürünlere sahiptirler" diye kaydetmiştir. Gerek M.S. 629'da Türkistan'a gelen Buda rahibi Suan Zang'ın hatıralarında gerekse M.S. 981'de Turfan'a gelen Çin elçisi Wang Yende'nin raporunda ve diğer bir çok Çin yıllıklarında banzer kayıtlar bulunmaktadır. Doğu Türkistan'da "Kızıl Ming Öy" diye bilinen Budda tapınaklarındaki dans ve orkestra resimleri 8-9. yüzyıla ait 27 ülusluk tiyatro eseri "Maytrisimit"in Uygurcaya çevrilip sahnelerde oynanması Uygur Türklerinin zengin tiyatroculuk geleneğine sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu konuda Alman Türkolog A.V. Gabain şöyle demektedir; " ... O dönem (iç bölgeler ) deki çinlilere nazaran, eski Şincan (Doğu Türkistan'ın) sanatı, sessiz tiyatrosu, danslı tiyatrosu, orkestrası ve ilkel tiyatrosu büyük celbetme gücüne sahipti. Elde bulunan el yazmalarına göre, Türk Uygur alfabesinde yazılan sahne eserlerinin konusu Çince sahne eserlerinkinden üstünlük göstermektedir. Here are highlights from ‘Kabuki for Beginners’, the educational video program that introduces traditional Japanese performing arts, a project commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The Navigator is the kabuki actor Kataoka Ainosuke VI, who is joined by fellow actors active in the Kamigata (Osaka/Kyoto) region. This video can be enjoyed by both those who have never seen kabuki before, as well as by those who are familiar with it. This project was planned and produced by Shochiku Co., Ltd. During the current difficult situation when live kabuki appreciation programs are not possible, the company wishes to continue its educational efforts for the next generation by presenting this opportunity to learn about the beauty of the traditional performing arts and the fascination of kabuki. In this video, we take a look at the eleven scenes most often performed from the epic jidaimono play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura ("Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees"), written in 1747 for the bunraku puppet theatre by the playwrights Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shōraku and Namiki Senryū I, the same team that produced Kanadehon Chūshingura and Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, the other two classical masterpieces of the kabuki repertoire. This covers four of the five acts of the original play. The missing first one, including the scenes Ōuchi, Kitasaga, Kawagoe Jōshi and Heisoto, is very rarely performed nowadays.
