Best Plex NAS Drie of the Year Top 3 NAS for Plex of the Year 🤍 If you are looking to upgrade your multimedia setup in 2019, chances are that you have already heard of the great multimedia application, Plex Media Server (PMS), that allows you to access all your movies and boxsets anywhere in the world, on almost any device! Plex is supported by everything from Smart TVs and Consoles, through to iOS and Android Phones – this incredibly accessible and intuitive media application provides all your owned media to you, as well as dressing it with titles, descriptions, background studio information, cast lists and recommendations for other shows! It is the perfect multimedia tool for those that want the colourful and information user interface similar to Netflix and Amazon Instant, but want to enjoy their own media, rather than stream/rent media from an online source! If you are looking to build your perfect Plex Media Server, it is highly recommended that you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. Each NAS drive arrives with a dedicated operating system and user-interface. This UI is accessible via a web browser like Chrome or Firefox, as well as multiple mobile apps and PC clients. Each brand has a very different software build quality/priority and it is recommended you choose a brand that is best suited to your environment for ease of access (e.g Synology is very similar to Mac OSX and QNAP NAS is very similar to Android). Additionally, you will most likely be using the NAS drive for more than Plex, in an effort to make the most of your purchase, as different NAS brands provide differing levels of support for backups, DLNA media, Surveillance, VMs and more. However, it got complicated. We went from 3-5 media streaming services, to suddenly HUNDREDS, with Films/Boxsets appairing on exclusive platforms (in some cases actual tv seasons being divided across different services too). This also led to TV shows being available/featured on a streaming service considerably shorter, due to the show-owner realising that timed exclusivity and switching streamingly platforms is much more lucrative in the long run. So, the streaming services STOPPED being so convenient, stopped being such good value – with most households now having/needing 3-4 different subscription services (so, in most cases Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the cable TV/Sky provider service) and spending $400-500 a year, and not owning a single piece of media or having control of when things are not available. Add to that the rather bias search abilities of these platforms pushing ‘suggested’ content and you cannot help but pine for those simple days of sitting on the sofa and watching that DVD. Many who have been following the release strategy of the popular network-attached storage brand, Synology, have been noticing something of a shift towards premium business products this last few years. The brand still features numerous solutions that are targeted toward home, value and prosumer users, but it is undeniable that Synology has been giving a great deal of attention to top-tier business and enterprise above all else in 2022. So far, the new Synology DS1522+ NAS is a solution that on the face of it is something a little bit more SMB and Prosumer, arriving in a 5 Bay desktop chassis and mid-range server CPU form. This new system has striking differences in a few key areas though compared with the DS1520+ predecessor and with little mention of a new DS922+ or DS923+ from the brand in any form, many are wondering if the new DS1522+ is what the shape of the smaller end of the Synology portfolio is going to look like moving forward. Today I want to review the Synology DS1522+ to find out whether this new iteration of the popular Diskstation series is a move for good or for bad, discuss its hardware and what this newer configuration of hardware is able to do. But when it comes to finding the right NAS, which of QNAP's variety of solutions is best for your needs? We help narrow it down to help you chose the ideal NAS to host your Plex Media Server. Setting up your Plex Media Server with a NAS should only take a few minutes. Plex lets you store all your media-including movies, TV shows, photos, and music on the NAS, and allowing you to enjoy them on all your devices including your smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, as well as via most media streaming devices (e.g. Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV). A perfect media experience, whether it's watching a movie or video or streaming music, requires a stable environment that includes your Plex Media Server and your network. Since our NAS is designed to run 24/7 without having to power off every day like your PC, your multimedia files are available online all the time. The NAS acts as your private cloud which allows you to remotely access and enjoy your media anytime on any device. Transcoding is crucial when it comes to enjoying the smooth playback of your files without any interruptions. Original high definition content stored in formats such as .mkv, .mp4 and etc, often presents the challenge of file incompatibility with different streaming players. While on-the-go, bandwidth can lag while streaming high-def content stored from home, if it is not transcoding down to a suitable resolution would cause your bandwidth to lag. This is where Plex comes in-it transcodes media stored on your NAS and lets you play it on different media players and devices without stalling or hiccups. Because Plex uses only software transcoding, it relies mainly on the processor of the NAS to do hardware transcoding using the power of the NAS's CPU. Our suggestion: to guarantee a smooth video playback, choose the NAS model which has at least an Intel-based CPU for HD content transcoding, and Intel® Core™ i3 (or higher-end) for most scenarios, including extreme high bit-rate HD video content. It is recommended to check out the official NAS compatibility list by Plex. Taking into account your budget and transcoding needs, you can make an informed decision. If you've been paying pricey monthly fees for your TV cable boxes at home, then you may consider the all-new Plex DVR feature* that Plex has recently released to its Plex Pass users. The beautiful integration between DVR, Plex, and QNAP can drastically redefine your home TV lifestyle. Easily record the show and coming back a few hours later to enjoy while skipping the commercials. And because QNAP is also connected to your home network, you can easily set up the QNAP as the ultimate source of storage for all of your recorded content. I made this video after someone asked about choosing between two different NAS models grom Qnap and Synology, and neither was suitable to use as a Plex server, if you wanted to have the power of hardware accelerated transcoding. I neglected to mention that hardware transcoding is a feature of Plex Pass. Here are the url’s referenced in the video. Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming 🤍 NAS Compatibility List 🤍 And the direct spreadsheet download link. 🤍 Synology’s RAID Calculator, and remember, you can’t mix and match drive sizes , unless you’re upgrading in size. Start with a full rack of 4TB drives, and then if you replace one with a 12TB, that’s your new default drive size, unless you go larger, which then becomes the new default drive size. I didn’t mention that without shutting the NAS down and your Plex server with it, you can swap out a drive to replace if a drive is failing or you simply want to upgrade your storage cpacity, and the process takes about 36 hours with the default settings. This process can be speed up with a settings change, but the performance of your Plex server will most likely be affected. I would not proceed with a drive upgrade if bad weather is on the way and you have a risk of losing power. Also not mentioned, is the importance of buying a UPS to plug your NAS power cord in, along with a USB cable, so your new NAS can have a controlled shutdown instead of suddenly losing power, which can corrupt data.
Written Instructions: 🤍 Plex DSM 7 Setup Instructions: 🤍 As of right now, hardware transcoding does NOT work through Synology's GUI for Plex on DSM 7. The new generation of Synology diskstation NAS' that arrived in summer 2020 (DS920+, DS220+, DS420+ and DS720+) are all solid solutions for use as a Plex media server NAS, however lately many users have identified a recurring playback problem on these recent Intel Celeron powered NAS'.
