It's an acronym for "Search Engine Optimization." And it's the process of ranking web pages on the first page of Google's organic search results. This process of SEO has four core pillars of success: 1. KEYWORDS Keywords are the foundation of every successful SEO campaign. In fact, understanding how to pick the right keywords will make or break your campaign. I'll show you how to pick the right keywords for your business and your unique situation in the video. Once you've found keywords, you need to optimize your site's technical performance. In-depth keyword research training ➡️ 🤍 2. TECHNICAL Please don't fear the word "technical" because it's pretty easy once you understand what to look for. The goal of optimizing technical performance is twofold: First, we want Google to be able to crawl and index our pages in an efficient manner. Second, we want our site to have a tremendous User Experience (UX). I'll show you what to look for and how to optimize both elements in the video. Once you've found keywords and optimized for UX, it's time for the most important part: 3. CONTENT Think of content as the lead domino for SEO success. You should invest most of your time in optimizing and creating new SEO-driven content. Here's the key: You should always optimize BEFORE you create. I'll explain why in the video. And last, but not least: 4. BACKLINKS You can nail all previous pillars like a pro, but without backlinks, you'll struggle. What are backlinks? They are links from other websites and Google considers them as "votes." In theory, the more high-quality votes your page has, the more Google will trust it. Some websites will include multiple languages, while others might create entire sites to target specific regions or countries. Google's algorithm has to not only determine the best answer to the user's query, but which sites, or sections of a site, best apply based on the location and language. You also have to consider cultural and colloquial differences – Spanish content written for users in Spain probably wouldn't work for users in Mexico, and vice versa. Another example – if a user in the US searches for “football”, it's going to show the American version of football, while a user in the UK searching the same thing would show what Americans call soccer. If you're targeting customers in other countries, you need to be sure you're making it as easy as possible for Google to asses what's going on with your site. You'll also need to create a unique user experience for each country. One common misconception is that you simply need to release a section of your site in the targeted language to rank well – but even if your site has incredible visibility, that might not be enough to show up in the targeted country. You should never rely on Google Translate, or posting auto-translated content to your site. The translations won't be 100% accurate (and can sometimes be grossly inaccurate), which usually results in a poor user experience. Make sure your content is written by a native speaker of your target language, so you're sure to get all of the subtle nuances correct. Don't mix languages on the same page – Remember, you want to be crystal clear to Google, and if there are multiple languages on the page, Google isn't sure what's going on. Create separate pages for your targeted language – it's better for Google, and it's a better user experience. You'll also need to extend your link building efforts and build links to your international content from the targeted country. The ccTLD, or country code top level domain, is also important to establishing relevancy in other countries. Using a country's ccTLD helps to show Google that you're serving customers in that country. You'll need to pay attention to hosting as well. Google sees the IP address of your server, and if your server is geographically near or in your targeted country, that's another signal of relevancy. If you can get quality hosting in your targeted country, it's a good idea to do so. Hreflang is also important – it provides a way to explicitly tell Google which language and country you're targeting on a per-page basis. You can use hreflang in the head of your page, in your http header, or even in your xml sitemap. Make sure you're including local contact information for each targeted region, so local customers know who to contact if they have questions. If you have prices listed, it's important to list them in the local currency for your targeted country. When Google crawls the content, it will see that the currency matches the region. You'll want to use everything we've talked about in previous lessons to determine the quality of the links pointed at your site. It's a manual process, but there are several different tools that will help you pull the links. You've probably heard of Moz and Majestic – they're the two most popular tools for pulling link profiles. Ahrefs is another big player in the link profile game – and each of these tools pulls a different subset of links. These tools are emulations of Google's spiders – each tool has its own crawlers that follow the link trails of millions of sites on the internet. Since each tool crawls things differently, each tool will pull a list of links that's slightly different. SEMrush also has a robust link analysis tool – and we recommend using all 4 tools together. Sure, there's going to be overlap… but if you pull your links from all 4 tools, paste them all into a single Excel spreadsheet, and then de-dupe the list, you'll have the best possible view of your actual link profile. Pay attention to each tool's metrics for judging link quality. Moz uses Domain Authority and Page Authority, Majestic uses Trust Flow – each tool has a different metric. The metrics are calculated differently, but it's important to use the scores to determine the quality of the various links. Besides pulling and analyzing the links for your own site, you'll want to check the link profiles for your competitors as well. Not only can you gain valuable insight into why a competitor might be outranking you, you'll find opportunities for building links to your own site. Keep in mind – you need unique links to win… but going after competitors' links is a great starting strategy. If a site links to your competitor, it's highly likely that they'll link to you too. Plus, if a competitor has links from a few sites that you don't have, then that helps them, since the links are unique. If you're able to get links from the same sites, they're no longer unique for your competitor, so they won't be as valuable. #LinkAnalysis #Ahrefs #Moz #SEOcourse #SEOtutorial #SEMrushAcademy

Mobile SEO is vital if you want to be sure that you're visible to customers at the right time and place. According to Google research, mobile device users are more likely to purchase after a search than desktop users, so they're more valuable to your bottom line. There's a lot of overlap between desktop SEO and mobile SEO – in fact, all of the tactics that we've covered in previous lessons apply to both desktop and mobile. You're still focusing on performance, content, and user experience. One primary difference of SEO for mobile is that with mobile SEO, you're typically focusing more on local results. In the past Google's index was based off desktop crawls. So, even when you are searching using a mobile device, the results that you see are based off of the desktop results. In 2018 Google's switching to a mobile-first index. Effectively, they're reversing directions… Now, even when you search on a desktop computer, the index will be based off of crawls of the mobile web. Many businesses remove content from their mobile sites because they think that their sites are prettier on mobile devices if they have less content. If you have less content on your mobile device, you'll be less likely to show up in searches – even on desktop computers. You've got to have the content on your mobile site if you want to show up well. The speed at which your mobile site loads is also incredibly important, and it's a weighted factor in the mobile first index. Boiled down to the simplest concept, the internet is really just a huge collection of pages that are connected by links. I like to use cities as a metaphor - a website is like a house, where each room in the house is a different page on the site, with hallways and stairs connecting the different rooms, but the rooms add up to a cohesive whole. You have different houses on the street, but everything in the neighborhood is related. If you add even more houses, you end up with a city. Think of links like roads - they connect the different buildings and neighborhoods together. A big popular website is like a large office building, with lots of roads leading to it. It's easy to see, and there are plenty of different ways to get there. If you're building a new site, it's like you're adding a new building to the city. Where would you rather have that building? If you're right on the intersection of the freeway and several cross streets, it'll be a popular location that's easy to find. But if you build it way outside of town in the middle of a huge field, no one will know it's there. Back in the beginning of the World Wide Web, when there weren't that many sites, you could only reach a website by typing in the address of the page or by clicking a link on another site. How Do Search Engines Work? In the early 90s, the web had grown too large to sustain such a simple navigation and discovery process. The first search engines were born - now users could type keywords into the search engine and receive a list of websites related to the search phrase. Excite, AltaVista, and Yahoo! quickly changed the way that people were using the internet. In the late 90s, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were working on their own search engine, and they were the first to use links as a signal of authority and trust. When Google was finally released, it quickly became the favored search engine because the quality of the search results far surpassed the other options. The search engines created advanced algorithms that analyze hundreds of factors for each website - both on and off the website. Typically in local SEO, you're working on a much smaller scale. You don't need thousands or even hundreds of links. Many local businesses have fewer than 20 sites linking to them. So adding a handful of links can make a massive difference. With local SEO, your focus should be on building links from local businesses and websites. We're not worried about Domain Authority or Trust Flow, because many times the local sites linking to you are much smaller and have less overall authority. We don't even care if the link is followed or nofollowed – in the local algorithm, nofollowed links still carry weight and can make a difference. Basically, all the things that traditional link builders avoid are the things that you're going after in local SEO. I like to call them “crappy church links” – that really juicy hyper-local link from a church website that's absolutely killer for the algorithm… looks exactly like the kind of link that the traditional guys would avoid like the plague. It's got a DA below 15, it's a nofollow link, and the site that's linking is pretty ugly. It's much easier to build links for local SEO, again because you're at a smaller scale. You don't have to create massive, awesome content pieces and then run huge PR campaigns so people see the content. Usually, you can simply look at what the business is already doing and you'll have awesome link opportunities. Relationships are an easy source of local links too – it's likely that the business has been there for years, forming relationships with other businesses and individuals in the local community. It's infinitely easier to get a link from someone you know… Local sponsorships and charity work are another great source of local links – basically, if you're involved in the local community, it's incredibly easy to build local links. Citations are another important off site signal in local SEO. Citations are mentions of your business' name, address, and phone number (commonly called NAP) on other websites. It's important to Google that your NAP is exactly the same everywhere it's listed online. Citations aren't as powerful as they used to be – now they're more of a foundational tactic. It's important to get them right, but it's not a hugely important signal that you need to add to month in and month out. This graphic shows the local search ecosystem for the US, so you can see the relationships between the different citation sources. The 4 major aggregators are at the top, feeding down to the second tier sites, in turn feeding to the third tier sites. Then everything feeds to Google's local algorithm which looks upstream to check consistency. If you're doing local SEO in another country, the ecosystem will be different, and probably less complex, but the idea is still the same. In fact, recent data shows that 50% of users expect a website to load in less than 2 seconds. Research also shows that for every additional second of page load speed, you conversions can drop by up to 20%. Speed is also important for SEO. Site speed is a small ranking factor in Google's algorithm. Plus, if your pages load faster, it's more likely that users will visit more pages, and be more likely to link to your content. Finally, if you've got a massive site, Google's spiders will be able to crawl more pages in the allotted time available for crawling your site. There are three important factors you'll need to keep an eye on for page speed. You need to pay attention to “time to first byte”, or how long it takes the server to respond to the first request for information. Next, you'll want to look at the total download time for the page, or how long it takes to fully download all of the page elements. Finally, you'll need to look at the full render time – how long it takes to download everything needed for the page and render it to visual completion. We suggest using 🤍 – you can run a test that analyzes your page load speed, with the results displayed in an easy-to-read waterfall graphic. If you're testing your site against competitors, you can run multiple sites at once to see how they compare – and you can even record a video showing what users see as each site loads. If you've got problems with page load speed, you'll need to determine what's causing the slow speed. If you've got a slow response time or static assets are downloading slowly, you'll need to look at improving your caching or using a content delivery network. If dynamic pages are loading slowly, take a look at the site code. If you have a problem with your visual render speed, take a look at the external resources. Many times, third party plugins or resources can drastically slow down your site. Google's PageSpeed Insights (🤍 can be a helpful tool as well. It's important to understand the different elements on the SERP and how or why information shows up in each of the different areas. In this lesson, we'll walk through the various elements that might show up on a SERP, depending on the phrase that's being searched. At the top of the page, we'll see the paid results – typically, you'll see 4 ads, and if multiple ad extensions are showing, this might be all you see above the fold. For more competitive terms, you might also see a block of AdWords ads at the bottom of the page. The SERP will also show the standard “10 blue links” – the organic results that you're targeting with your SEO efforts. SERP Features Those are the basics – they're present on nearly every search you'll possibly try. Beyond the standard organic and paid listings, you could also see any combination of the following twelve elements: Featured snippets – a featured snippet is a “quick answer” – the summary of the answer to the search query, pulled from an authoritative web page. The snippet displays the source page's title and URL as well. There are 3 kinds of featured snippets, based on the type of query and the format of the answer: paragraph snippets, list snippets, and table snippets. Most featured snippets are paragraph snippets. Snippets are displayed above the organic search results, effectively creating a position zero. Shopping results also display above the organic results. These are paid results called Product Listing Ads or PLAs. Typically they're displayed in carousel format and include images, price information, and review stars. If a user searches for an exact business name or domain (where Google can clearly determine that there's definite brand intent), up to 10 sitelinks might be displayed under the primary SERP link. If all 10 sitelinks are displayed, they'll show in 2 columns, effectively taking up the top 5 organic positions on the SERP. Image packs can appear at any organic position, and they show a horizontal row of images that click through to a Google Images search. If Google determines that visual content would be a valuable answer to the query, an image pack could be displayed. If a search query is broad or ambiguous, Google sometimes displays an in-depth articles widget. Three articles appear in the block, and while they look almost exactly like the standard organic results, the block only “counts” for one organic position. These article blocks are almost always articles from huge publishers with massive authority. Knowledge cards typically appear at the top of the SERP, similar to featured snippets. Instead of pulling the answer from an authoritative page, they tend to be information that's in the public domain – either from human-edited data or from a data stream from a Google partner. Unlike featured snippets, it's not an element that you'll be able to target with your SEO efforts. Knowledge panels appear to the right side of the standard organic results. The information that populates a knowledge panel is pulled from various sources, including Google data partnerships, human-edited sites like Wikipedia, and data from the Google site index. While you can't target a generic knowledge panel with your SEO efforts, you will be able to influence what shows up in the knowledge panel for a brand search for your own company (or your client's company). Local pack. If the phrase you're searching for has local intent, Google will display a local pack in the SERP. The local pack appears at the top of organic results, and is especially space-dominating on mobile. The local pack includes a map and three locations, with address and phone number information displayed for each location. Depending on the type of local query, the pack will also display a website link, a directions link, or image and pricing information. If you're searching for something that's news-worthy or relevant to current events, Google might include a news box in the SERP. Results are pulled from Google News. A “bad link” can hurt your site – it could be a spam signal, or in extreme cases, actually get your site penalized. More than anything, you want to avoid paid links. Remember, Google wants to see links that you earned – and buying links is a clear violation of that standard. If you get caught purchasing links, you'll most likely be penalized. If you get a significant number of links from foreign language sites, but you're a local business in the US, that's another bad sign. There's really no reason for a pizza place in Dallas to get links from sites in Europe. You need to be careful with reciprocal links too. Back in the day, site owners would do the whole “hey, I'll link to you if you link to me” thing – and it worked. But reciprocal links are incredibly easy for Google to detect, and they're typically devalued. A few reciprocal links won't hurt you, but if the majority of your links are reciprocal, then it's clear that you're not getting links because you've got valuable content. Links from sites in bad neighborhoods are considered bad links as well. These bad neighborhoods are made up of a group of sites from a specific questionable industry that tend to send out lots of links to unrelated businesses, like online casinos, adult websites, or pharmaceutical sites. If a site looks shady, or is from a shady industry, just avoid getting links from it – unless it's topically relevant to what you're selling. Obviously, you want to avoid getting links from any sites that have been hacked. You also want to avoid getting any links from PBNs or blog networks. Google actively penalizes blog networks, since they clearly exist to manipulate the algorithm. Any links you acquire from spamming blog comments or forums are bad links as well – there's no value in blasting links to your site from every possible source where you can just fill out a form. That's not to say that form links should be avoided altogether – I had an auto dealer client who was an avid fisherman, and was incredibly active on a local fishing forum site. When someone posted and said that they were looking to buy a new pickup truck to town their fishing boat, he left a comment that the guy should come to see him at his dealership and left a link. Because he was an active member of the fishing forum community, that link was natural and relevant – and it brought him a ton of referral traffic as well. Now, if he hadn't been active on that site ever before and he had popped in to leave that reply, it wouldn't be relevant or useful, and it would have been considered a bad link. Remember – it's all about relevancy when it comes to links. You could almost say that any link from a site that's not related in any way to your site is a bad link. If you're working with a site that has questionable or bad links, it's important to analyze the scale of the problem. Do you only have a few bad links, or do the bad links account for a large percentage of your overall link profile? A small number of bad links won't hurt you, it's common for any site to get a few… but if you've got a larger proportion of bad links, you're at risk. Google will think you're trying to manipulate the algorithm, which will most likely result in problems for your site. With recent updates to the algorithm, Google says it now simply ignores or devalues bad links instead of actively penalizing sites. However, Google adjusts the algorithm daily, and we never know what changes might come in the future. The best strategy is to avoid questionable or obviously bad links altogether, so your link profile looks natural and organic. #BadBacklinks #SEOcourse #SEOtutorial #SEMrushAcademy

You've got to determine which keywords are important to target, and out of that list, which ones have the most search volume. It won't do you much good to optimize for a phrase that no one ever searches for. Sure, it might be really easy to rank for that phrase, since there's very little competition, but ranking number one for a phrase that no one will search won't bring you any additional traffic. The broader a term is, the more traffic it's likely to see. We call these terms “fat head” terms – they're basic and wide in focus. As you add more keywords to the phrase, you move into the range we call “chunky middle” – there's not as much search volume, but there's less competition as you get more exact, so it's easier to rank. When you add even more to the phrase, that's called “long tail” – and as you can see from the graph, the volume drops further, but again, less competition means it's even easier to rank. One of the best sources of keyword data is Google's Keyword Planner, located inside the AdWords user interface. You can look up keywords, based on location and seasonality, and see estimated search volumes. Ubersuggest (🤍 and Answer the Public (🤍) are two sites that provide valuable keyword research data as well. You can start with your important keyword phrases and sort through related keywords and common searches. Moz has a Keyword Difficulty tool (🤍 that helps you see the top competitors for your keywords, and you can get some great insights here. You should definitely check out the SEMrush tool - the Keyword difficulty tool (🤍 helps you find the right terms to target, based on potential competition and search volume. The Keyword Magic tool (🤍 helps you come up with even more ideas for keywords and helps you segment your terms into groups. I also like to use SEMrush to see which terms competitors are targeting with PPC ads. This is incredibly helpful data if you're working with a site in a vertical that you've never worked in before or in a new location. Check out what competitors are spending big money and effort on in PPC, and that's usually a pretty good gauge of what's working for them – which means it's a great target for your site as well. On page content signals are one of the most weighted elements in Google's algorithm, so it's vital that you understand how to write and optimize site content. If you don't have a page that's optimized for the phrase you want to rank for, it's going to be nearly impossible to show up for that search. Google looked for pages that included the same keywords as the ones entered into the search, so if you had a page stuffed with keywords, you won. You also had to create pages for slight variances on each keyword. You'd use the keyword in every possible page element. You'd write content specifically for search engines, even though humans thought it sounded funny. Google realized that this wasn't really valuable to users. It was too easy to game the algorithm, and pages weren't very useful to actual humans. Today, it's a completely different focus. If you want to show up well in searches, you've got to write content that's truly useful and relevant. You can't write for Google – you have to write content that truly answers the question the user is asking. Google has gotten really good at figuring out a user's intent, and it's going to serve up results that best answer the searcher's actual intent. Let me reiterate - it's less about matching keywords and more about matching the intent. You should create one robust page with amazing content that matches the intent of all the related keywords that answer that potential query. So here's the process. You should already have a categorized list of keywords that you want to target. You'll then want to figure out what content will answer the intent of each group of keywords. Figure out what your content is going to look like – does your site have a specific template for page layout or are you creating something custom? Then sit down and write your content, and swing back through and make sure you've got your targeted keywords included. There's no magical keyword density, and there's no perfect format. Simply create the best content that answers the question. Here's the biggest pro tip: read your content out loud. Remember, it needs to sound conversational. If you read your content out loud, you'll hear how it actually sounds. If you're stuffing keywords, it's going to sound awkward and clunky. Let's start by looking at the components of a URL. You can break and URL into 5 components. At the beginning, we have the protocol – this is going to be either HTTP or HTTPS, depending on whether or not the site is secure, followed by colon slash slash. The subdomain follows the protocol. In most cases, the subdomain is simply www, but on larger sites, separate sections can live under a separate custom subdomain. The search engines look at subdomains as separate entities from the main website, so authority is calculated independently. Next, we've got the domain name, which is your custom name for the website. While Google has released several exact match domain name updates to lessen the power of a domain name made up of an exact match keyword phrase, it's still beneficial to use a domain that includes your important keywords. The top level domain follows the domain name – this is your .com, .net, .org, or any of the various TLDs that are available. Any page other than the home page will include a slug at the end, which is everything that comes after the TLD. The slug can include subfolders, or simply be a page address at the root of the site. Think of the slug as the actual address for the individual page on that specific domain. URLs are an important part of SEO – it's important to create URLs that are keyword-focused, while still being unique and as short as possible. When you're using multiple words in the slug, you should use hyphens to separate the words, like this: 🤍 You could also use underscores, like this: 🤍 Or plusses, like this: 🤍 But according to best practice, you should use hyphens. Make sure users can understand what the page is about, but try to leave out words like “an” or “the” – they're not really necessary for humans or for search engines. Avoid including the same keyword more than once in a URL as well. In a perfect world, a page's URL would be constant… but unfortunately, we all know it's not a perfect world. When you change website platforms, or roll out site updates, sometimes URLs will change. Since Google assigns authority at the page level, you don't want to lose any value when the URL of a page has to change. Also, if there are any other sites on the internet that link to the old URL, users who click on an old link will land on a 404 page and think your site is broken. In these situations, you'll want to set up URL redirects. A redirect is a directive that tells browsers and search engines that a page has been moved to a new address. It's great for users, because it's an automatic, seamless experience. For search engines, the value of the original page will be passed to the new address. To set up a redirect, you need 3 important components: The source, or original URL, the type of redirect you're using, and the destination, or new URL. There are several types of redirects, but as an SEO, you really only need to know two of them. The first is a 301 redirect – this is what you'll use in nearly every case. It tells the browser or search engine that the page has permanently moved to the new address. In certain cases, you might also use a 302 redirect, which is a temporary redirect. Search engines won't pass authority through a 302 redirect, so it should only be used during truly temporary situations like site maintenance. When you're starting SEO work on a new site, it's important to analyze any 301 or 302 redirects that have been set up in the past. Google wants to show results that are near the searcher, but it's not only about proximity. It's a tiered system – you have to have great local optimization to “make the cut”, and then the results are organized by proximity. You can't optimize for proximity, but it's important that you understand how it influences search results. You'll also need to be sure to explain the proximity factor to your clients, since they'll assume that it's possible to rank #1 in the map pack anywhere in their city. Google My Business is another important off site factor for local SEO. It's important to claim your location and ensure that your information is correct. The information you enter in your GMB dashboard will populate the info in your Knowledge Panel on brand searches. Unfortunately, mobile clicks on your website link in GMB or map searches are almost always attributed incorrectly. They're all organic clicks – you can't pull a map pack or business knowledge panel without a search. To make sure that you're getting credit for the organic traffic, add UTM tracking parameters to your website link. Put whatever you want in the source value, but make sure that you set medium to organic. Don't try to fake your address – a GMB listing can only be created for businesses with a physical location, where customers visit the business at that location. You have to have clear signage with your business name as well. If you're having problems accessing your GMB listing, the best solution is to contact Twitter support. Hop on Twitter and send a tweet to 🤍googlemybiz (🤍 and their awesome team will have you up and running in no time. They're also able to help with merges and deletions, so don't be shy – ask them for help! Reviews play a major part in the local algorithm as well. Google reviews are typically the first reviews a user will see for your business, since they're prominently displayed in your Knowledge Panel – but Google's algorithm looks at other review sites as well. You should try to spread your reviews evenly between Google, Facebook, industry review sites that matter for your particular vertical, and Yelp. In the US, Yelp populates the review stars on Apple maps – so any time someone searches for your business on an iPhone, they're going to see Yelp stars instead of Google stars. Outside of the US, you'll need to check Apple maps to see which sites are feeding the stars – typically, it'll be TripAdvisor, booking.com, or even foursquare. Make sure you're getting reviews on the site that matters for Apple Maps. Make sure you're responding to all of your reviews on the various platforms. It's important to remember, your replies to the negative reviews aren't really to the person who left the review – they're for the rest of the world who want to see how you deal with an upset customer. Make sure your replies are well-written and they actually address the situation – a generic “thanks for your review, please call us at this number” pasted as a reply to every review makes you look lazy. Personalization, behavioral signals, and social signals also come into play, just like they do with traditional SEO. Even though you've got more to worry about with local SEO, it's typically easier to achieve great results. You're not fighting against every competitor on the internet – you're only fighting against the few competitors in the same local area. And, since most small businesses and digital marketers don't know what local SEO even is, they're not including the additional local focus – which makes it easier to out-optimize them and outrank them. Looking at the HTML code for a link, it's the live text inside the link markup, highlighted here in red. There are 4 different kinds of anchor text: exact match, brand, generic, and naked URL. Exact match anchor text is exactly what it sounds like – the clickable text is an exact match of the keyword that you're targeting on the page the link points to. For example, if you're optimizing for a pizza joint in Dallas, Texas, you might have a link from a local blogger that says your restaurant has the “best pizza in Dallas”. Brand anchor text is simply your business name – if that pizza place you're optimizing is called “Giff's Delicious Pizza Pies”, then that's what the anchor text would be. Generic anchor text includes phrases like “click here” or “read more” or “view website” – the generic text has nothing to do with the content on either the page the link is on or the page the link points to. Naked URLs are the final kind of anchor text – this happens when the link displays the actual URL of the page that the link points to. Contrary to what you might read on many blog posts, there is no optimal percentage breakdown of which types of anchor text should make up your link profile. Exact match anchor text, while more powerful for building relevancy, is probably the most dangerous as well – if too many of your links include the same exact match phrase, that doesn't look natural. Remember, we said way back in the first section of lessons that Google is really just super advanced pattern detection. If the algorithm sees that all of your links, or the vast majority of them, are the same exact anchor text, that doesn't look natural. Most importantly, you'll need to optimize the title tag – this is the "title" element in the head of the page. It populates the text up in the tab at the top of the browser window when you're on that page, and it also usually populates the text on your blue link when you show up as a search result. (but many times Google will tweak what shows up) The title tag is typically the most weighted on page element, so it's important that you optimize it correctly. Skip the old school tactic of keyword phrase bar keyword phrase 2 bar keyword phrase 3. Remember, this is going to be your blue in the SERP – you need to write something interesting, that will entice people to click through to your site. The next important element is the page heading. There are multiple heading tags, but typically, your H1 tag contains the main heading for the page, and you'll use h2s or h3s for other subheadings. Again, skip the single exact keyword, and write something conversational that describes what the page is about. Make sure that the main keyword phrase for the intent-target of the page is present in both the title tag and your H1 heading. Clearly, you need your keyword phrase and variants in your actual page copy. One element that's often overlooked is image optimization. Before uploading your images, it's beneficial to change the file names to include your target keywords. Don't forget your alt text – every embedded image should have optimized alt text that includes your targeted keywords. Make sure you're optimizing the image files as well. You should always load your images at the size they'll be displayed, and make sure you've compressed the images before upload. Basically, you want to minimize the file size – the larger the file, the longer it will take to download. We talked about URLs back in section three – whenever you've got the ability to customize the URL for a page, you should include your targeted keyword phrase. Remember to use hyphens to separate your words. It's important to include your targeted phrase in the meta description for the page - the meta description doesn't carry any weight in the algorithm, but it populates the grey description under your blue link in Google. Google gets trillions of search queries to analyze, and it has determined that for certain types of searches, users need results that are nearby, even if they didn't include a geo-modifier in their search query. With Local SEO, you're optimizing a site to show up in searches in a particular geographic area. The best example of the local algo in action is pizza. Let's say your sitting in your office, and you want to order a pizza. You type 2 words into Google – “pizza delivery” – and you get a list of pizza places that are near your office. Later that night, maybe you're a huge pizza fan and you want more, so when you get home, you type the same 2 words into Google – “pizza delivery” – and the search results are completely different. That's the local algorithm at work. If you're not sure that Local SEO applies to you, the best way to check is to search for a few of your most important keyword phrases – make sure you're only searching the phrase and not including any city or geo terms. If any of the search results display a map pack, then boom – you need local SEO. Sure, there's a lot of overlap between regular SEO and Local SEO, but if you're working on a site that pulls local SERPs, you're going to get much better results if you do local SEO. Local SEO is a more difficult, because additional signals come into play. Since Google is trying to show the best possible results in a particular area, location signals are key. You also have to put a local focus on your content and link building efforts. Thanks to algorithm updates over the last few years, one of the most important ranking signals is having a physical address in the city or region being searched. If you don't have a physical storefront in the city, it's pretty much impossible to show up in any map pack for searches in that city. Local SEO is also difficult because proximity is one of the most weighted ranking factors. While it's not the ultimate end-all, be-all factor, it's powerful enough to drastically change search results for users that are only a few blocks apart. Topical relevancy is still your most important goal, but you also have to worry about locational relevancy. Back in the day, you could simply stuff the name of your city into your text and that would be enough… But Google's algorithm is too sophisticated for that to work anymore. Your content has to actually BE localized – it's got to be about your targeted phrase AND the local area. SMBs have a huge advantage in this area – it's much easier for them to write localized content down to the neighborhood level. The big enterprise sites have a much more difficult time with localization – typically, you'll have a location page for each of the locations, but product and service pages won't have a geographic focus. You'll need to include your location keyword in all of the important page elements: title tag, H1 heading, content, image alt text, URL, and meta description – for every page on your site. Write localized blog content as well. Your blog doesn't have to be all about your business – talk about the local area, what's going on in the community, and things like that. If you make your blog a local destination, you'll get more traffic and you'll build more local relevancy. You've got to own your own back yard – make sure that you're fully optimized and ranking well in local searches before you try to optimize for nearby cities. Because you don't have a location in the nearby city, it'll be much harder to rank there. If you want to try to show up in a city where you have no physical location, you can use an advanced strategy called local content silos. Basically, you create a siloed off area of the site that's geo-optimized for the nearby city. You create a strong internal linking structure within the silo with geo-optimized anchor text. Then you'll have to double your link building efforts, so you can build links from the targeted city to the silo on your site. It takes a long time – you're trying to build relevancy for a city where you have no physical location, and you're trying to beat competitors who are actually located there… but it does work. You won't show up in the map pack, since it's so heavily influenced by proximity, but you can show up in the localized organic results.
